Michelle Litchman is a Family Nurse Practitioner specializing in diabetes care. She is an e-patient supporter and social media enthusiast. Michelle credits the diabetes online community for making her a more educated and compassionate clinician. Michelle provides house calls in the greater Salt Lake Valley to homebound older adults with diabetes, and sees patients in the outpatient setting at Wasatch Internal Medicine in Salt Lake City, Utah. She is dedicated to working with patients in developing realistic treatment plans and is an advocate for insulin pumps, continuous glucose monitoring systems, and mobile apps for diabetes management. Enrolled in a PhD program at the University of Utah, Michelle is interested in how the diabetes online community impacts health outcomes.
Michelle envisioned and co-developed the Diabetes Mixer with MJ Tran. The Diabetes Mixer is a social networking event for adults with type 1 diabetes and is held in Salt Lake City, Utah. The first Diabetes Mixer launched in April 2011 and was full of great people, delicious food, live music, prizes, swag bags, and Mike Lawson; it was a huge success! Based on the success of the Diabetes Mixer, Michelle and MJ were asked by the Utah Department of Health Diabetes Prevention and Control Program to host an encore Diabetes Mixer in October 2011. The second event featured a live painter and Ginger Vieira’s amazing slam poetry. The video from the most recent Diabetes Mixer can be seen here http://vimeo.com/31549841. Based on their efforts with the Diabetes Mixer, Michelle and MJ were finalists in the Wego Health Activist Awards in the “Offline Crusader” category. Michelle, MJ, and the Diabetes Mixer planning committee are excited for the next Diabetes Mixer on April 30th, the theme is “sugar-free comedy” and will feature comedian Chelcie Rice.
