Indianapolis to Dubai
Headed to the World Diabetes Congress
I left for Dubai on 12-3-2011 at 5:30 PM. I was excited and nervous. I have never flown outside of the USA. I didn’t know what to expect. I was a woman traveling to the middle east, alone.
While I was waiting to board the flight to Atlanta-I man approached me. He wanted to know my native country. I laughed at him. I told him I lived in the USA but I was traveling to Dubai to attend the World Diabetes Congress. He asked if I was a physician. I told him I was the founder of Diabetes Social Media Advocacy. I explained what DSMA was and how it was created. He said, “Sister, may God continue to please you and the work that you are doing.” I smiled, thanked him and walked away. A few minutes later, I was approached by another man. He asked for my business card because he was just told he had pre-diabetes and he would like to follow DSMA. He said he has a lot of diabetes related questions but he isn’t sure where to start. I told him I could answer a few questions and lead him into the right direction.
I did a little investigating. I was curious-there were 25 people in 1 group traveling to Dubai. The groups of people are former military; they are traveling to Dubai as contractors. I was happy I ran into them. I didn’t have to carry my bags. They helped me make it to the right terminal and made sure I caught my flight to Dubai. I didn’t sleep well on the flight to Dubai. I watched a few movies. I tossed and turned. My blood sugar was out of range-I stayed in the middle 200′s during the whole flight.
15 hours later. I landed in Dubai.
The Dubai airport is HUGE! But it was fairly easy to make it to the next location. I made it past customs. I scanned the area.-the men and women were on separate sides of the street. I walked up and down the sidewalk. I noticed there were 2 different taxi cabs-red top (men only, unless you were traveling with a man)and pink top (women only). I jumped in the pink top taxi. I excited about to
decision I made.
The airport was 20 minutes from my hotel. The lady in the taxi drove very fast. Dubai was beautiful. The hotel I stayed in was nice. I was exhausted. I needed to take a hot shower and go to sleep. I showered. I called home. Thanks to jet lag and excitement, I didn’t get as much sleep as I wanted.
