Guest Post: Thankful in spite of it all by Mike Durbin
Thankful in spite of it all
I’d like to begin this post by thanking Cherise for inviting me to write a guest post for DMSA, and for her patience with me in getting it to her. It’s an honor, and I appreciate the opportunity.
You know, it’s not always easy to feel blessed and thankful when living with type 2 diabetes and congestive heart failure. So often, the day-to-day management routine, the insane medication regimen, and the constant physical discomfort and mental anguish of it all leave me feeling so bitter. And at times, I’m left wondering whether the effort I put into my fight to stay alive is really worth it, especially with the knowledge that I could still be gone tomorrow.
Despite all of the rough time and negative thoughts, though, I can honestly say that I do feel blessed, and am quite thankful for so many things.
The fact of the matter is that I’m still alive, and that is definitely something for which I’m thankful. And each day that I’m allowed to wake up is a blessing.
I’m thankful to have a loving and supportive girlfriend who has been by my side through this journey. She’s the one who insisted I go to the doctor in the first place, so she really is a lifesaver.
I’m thankful for my family, who do what they can to help me deal with everything from over 230 miles away. Sometimes, just knowing they care is more than enough.
I’m thankful for the internet, social networks, and all forms of social media, because without them, I wouldn’t have a job, and wouldn’t know half of what I do about the health conditions with which I live.
And last, but certainly not least, I am thankful to have found the Diabetes Online Community. The amazing folks who make up the D-OC have been, and continue to be, among my biggest supporters. I’m blessed to call you all my friends.
Thank you, and Be Blessed!
